The predecessor of Daoxiangcun Group was Suzhou Daoxiangcun, founded in 1773 (the 38th year of the Qianlong reign) in Suzhou, China. Over its 247-year history, Daoxiangcun has evolved into a well-known modern food enterprise with the dedication of generations of Daoxiangcun people to tradition and innovation.
Daoxiangcun Group has over 120 modern production lines in China and abroad. It has obtained various certifications such as QS, GMP, HACCP, and ISO9001. With a 100,000-level air purification production workshop, continuous monitoring of the production process, and a multi-dimensional, transparent, aseptic production approach, the company combines its rich cultural heritage with modern processing technology.
The ability to develop new technologies and products is essential for building core competitiveness. In 2015, Daoxiangcun Group invested over 20 million RMB in research and development, maintaining an annual growth rate of nearly 20%. The company leverages its strong technical capabilities through collaborations with Jiangnan University, national food research institutions, and quality supervision and inspection departments. They have established platforms like the “Chinese Pastry Food Technology Research and Development Center,” the “Fulinmen Joint Baking Research Institute,” and the “Suzhou Industrial Park Daoxiangcun Postdoctoral Incubation Station” to promote independent innovation. This has led to the optimization of critical technologies in baking, fermentation, and the development of new products and technologies.
In response to China’s “Belt and Road” initiative and the “Going Global” strategy, Daoxiangcun Group implemented the “Daoxiangcun Goes Global” strategy. They have registered the “Daoxiangcun” trademark in over 60 countries and regions worldwide. To date, they export products to more than 40 countries and regions through various channels, including cross-border stores, allowing overseas Chinese to savor the taste of their homeland and introducing Chinese culture to international friends.
Suzhou has always been a major metropolis in Jiangnan, providing favorable conditions for the development of Suzhou-style pastries. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the local economy thrived, and bureaucrats and wealthy gentry pursued a higher quality of life. This led to the development of festival cuisine, influenced by seasonal changes, garden architecture, and traditional arts. The result was a unique style of pastry. The Qianlong era marked the recognition of Suzhou-style pastries as a benchmark in the industry.
Suzhou Daoxiangcun is one of the first nationally recognized Chinese time-honored brands. Its pastry-making techniques have a clear lineage of inheritance and have been passed down to the sixth generation. Suzhou-style mooncake-making techniques have also been included in Jiangsu province’s list of intangible cultural heritage. Suzhou Daoxiangcun’s fifth-generation pastry artisan, Xu Hongsheng, explains that Suzhou-style pastries are renowned for their high-quality ingredients, meticulous craftsmanship, and exquisite final products, making them representative of traditional Chinese pastries.
Suzhou Daoxiangcun offers a wide range of pastries throughout the four seasons. Spring features large mooncakes and rice wine cakes; summer offers refreshing pastries and iced snowflake pastries; autumn presents delicate fruits and Suzhou-style mooncakes; winter includes sugar rice cakes, walnut pastries, and horse hoof pastries. Each season has its unique specialties.
In 2017, Suzhou Daoxiangcun established an Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Center within the group to rescue many lost Suzhou-style traditional pastries. By referencing decades-old archives and documents dating back to the Republican era, and through extensive experimentation, the company successfully revived dozens of Suzhou-style specialties, including pine nut cakes, iced snowflake pastries, refreshing pastries, four-flavor sugar pastries, and cloud slice cakes.
Founded in 1773 in Jiangnan Suzhou, Suzhou Daoxiangcun has been in operation for over two and a half centuries.
