“NeiLianSheng” was founded in the year 1853 (the third year of the Xianfeng era in the Qing Dynasty), by its founder, Zhao Ting, who hailed from Wuqing County. In his early years, Zhao Ting learned the art of shoemaking in a workshop in the capital city of Beijing, and thanks to his exceptional aptitude, he quickly became skilled in the craft. After accumulating a vast network of customers and gaining some management experience, Zhao Ting decided to venture out on his own. Soon, with the financial backing of a prominent individual in Beijing known as “General Ding,” he provided the capital needed to establish the NeiLianSheng Boot and Shoe Store.

With his keen insight, Zhao Ting analyzed the state of the shoemaking industry in Beijing at that time and recognized the absence of specialized stores for crafting court shoes. Consequently, he resolved to open a shop dedicated to crafting court shoes. Leveraging his connections, he began producing court shoes for imperial relatives, court officials, and civil and military officials.

Beijing NeiLianSheng Footwear Co., Ltd., has its flagship store located at 34 Qianmen Dashilan Commercial Street in the bustling Qianmen area. It is renowned both domestically and internationally for manufacturing thousand-layer fabric-soled shoes. Currently, it is the largest producer of handmade fabric shoes in China, operating in both retail and wholesale capacities, and it is structured as a joint-stock company. The registered trademark “NeiLianSheng” features the hand-written style of Guo Moruo. In 1988, the company renovated its business premises on the original site, with a retail area of over 1,700 square meters. The exterior design is reminiscent of Qing Dynasty architecture, with yellow tiles, red columns, gilded paintings, and a magnificent appearance. The interior décor showcases ethnic characteristics, with palace-style lanterns and realistic antique-style shelves.

In order to manage and operate the company in the 21st century, an enterprise ERP system has been implemented to facilitate information management across various aspects, including production and manufacturing, distribution and retail, financial management, data analysis, and e-commerce. Through the company’s website, it can seamlessly exchange information related to the company’s operations, products, and branches with franchisees. This fosters resource sharing and enables customers to make purchases through NeiLianSheng’s B2C Shanglu Mall or flagship Tmall store. The company obtained ISO 9001 international quality system certification in 2002. In 2008, it achieved ISO 14001 environmental management system certification, which promoted energy efficiency and environmental protection while ensuring the ecological soundness of its products. NeiLianSheng actively participated in drafting national standards for the Chinese fabric shoe industry, and it holds patents for its thousand-layer sole fabric shoes and woolen sole fabric shoes. The company produces over 3,000 varieties of its own shoes, encompassing a comprehensive product structure, with a primary focus on middle to high-end consumer groups, including men, women, and children. The store primarily engages in distinctive operations, emphasizing the traditional characteristics of its products and showcasing a rich commercial culture and personalized management style that come with being a century-old shop. The company boasts nearly a hundred branch stores and counters.

“NeiLianSheng” consists of three characters, serving as both a business name and a brand. Reflecting on the century-old success of “NeiLianSheng” products, it is attributed to the quality of the products and excellent service. In earlier years, the “Luzhong Beizai” (Record of Shoe Sizes) served as one of the earliest “customer relationship management records” in China and is now included in the MBA case library of Guanghua School of Management at Peking University.
