Haval is a subsidiary brand under Great Wall Motors, established on March 29, 2013. Haval primarily focuses on SUV models and operates independently alongside the Great Wall brand. It uses its own branding, independent product development, production, and service systems, with a primary focus on SUV production and sales.
Haval accounts for a significant proportion of Great Wall Motors’ SUV sales. As of September 2019, its flagship model, the Haval H6, had achieved the highest SUV sales for 76 consecutive months. Haval, as the successor to Great Wall Safe, plays a crucial role in connecting various Great Wall SUV products.
Haval (Haval) is a vital series within Great Wall Motors’ SUV lineup and enjoys popularity among a wide range of off-road enthusiasts. The Haval series includes models such as IF, M1, M2, M4, H2, H3, H5, H6, H7, H8, the pure electric SUV Haval E, and several practical pickup trucks. These models have achieved strong sales performance both domestically and internationally.
On March 29, 2013, during the annual meeting of Great Wall Motor Co., Ltd. in Beijing, the company officially announced that Haval, as a flagship brand for Great Wall’s SUVs, would operate independently with a separate brand network, independent design and research and development, and an independent dealership and service system.
Haval is positioned by Great Wall Motors as a CUV (City Utility Vehicle) brand, signifying its role as a versatile urban vehicle. Its English name, “HOVER,” was used from 2005, representing “free soaring.” Due to the start of bulk exports to the European Union in 2006, the original English name had been registered in many countries. As a result, a new name was chosen that did not have any actual meaning in English and had a globally consistent pronunciation: “HAVAL.” The company aimed to imbue it with the meaning “have all,” which is the origin of the “HAVAL” logo.
On August 22, 2022, Haval’s General Manager, Li Xiaorui, revealed that Haval would officially stop selling fuel-powered vehicles by 2030.
On September 28, 2022, Great Wall Motors announced the launch of the Haval H6 new energy vehicle — the third-generation Haval H6 DHT-PHEV. The new vehicle came in two versions with ranges of 55km and 110km, and the post-subsidy starting price was between 15.98 and 17.38 million RMB.
On August 21, 2023, Great Wall Motors launched the large SUV Haval H5.
