TikTok is a short video social platform under ByteDance, launched in May 2017, with a vision to “Inspire Creativity and Bring Joy.”
On August 24, 2020, TikTok officially filed a lawsuit against the first executive order issued by President Trump on August 6. In a press release, TikTok stated, “We do not take suing the government lightly, but we have no choice but to take action to protect our rights, as well as the rights of our community and employees.”
On September 14, 2020, Oracle confirmed that it had reached an agreement with TikTok’s Chinese owner, ByteDance, to become its “trusted technology provider.” However, this agreement still required approval from the U.S. government. On September 18, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that it would implement a ban on WeChat and TikTok starting September 20.
On September 27, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled to temporarily delay the implementation of the U.S. government’s executive order to remove TikTok from U.S. mobile app stores. On November 2, TikTok announced an agreement with Sony Music Entertainment.
On February 10, 2021, the U.S. Biden administration requested that a federal court temporarily suspend the ban on TikTok’s overseas version, pending a review of the mobile application’s threat to U.S. national security. On March 12, Pakistan announced a ban on TikTok. On April 30, ByteDance’s CFO, Zhou Shouzi, was appointed as the CEO of TikTok, and Vanessa Pappas was appointed as TikTok’s Chief Operating Officer.
On June 9, 2021, U.S. President Biden revoked the bans on the social media apps TikTok and WeChat imposed by the Trump administration.
In November 2021, TikTok expanded into the television sector and had launched a TV app on Amazon Fire TV platform. TikTok expanded this to Samsung, LG, and Android TV platforms. As of December 23, TikTok was the most visited website on the internet in 2021.
In August 2022, TikTok and its overseas version achieved nearly 660 million downloads.
Data shows that in 2019, TikTok’s market share surpassed all Western social platforms, including Facebook and Twitter. In May 2020, both platforms had been downloaded over 2 billion times globally. In 2021, TikTok became the most visited website on the internet worldwide. In October 2022, TikTok’s global daily active users exceeded 1 billion.
In the United States, the platform has over 150 million monthly active users, close to half of the U.S. population. Many American users use this app to fulfill their dreams and realize their self-worth.
TikTok has repeatedly topped the charts on the App Store or Google Play in countries such as the United States, India, Germany, France, Japan, Indonesia, and Russia. TikTok has offices worldwide, including Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris, Berlin, Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Jakarta, Seoul, and Tokyo.
As of December 23, TikTok remained the most visited website on the internet in 2021.
As of March 2023, TikTok had 150 million monthly active users in the United States.
In December 2018, TikTok was ranked as the number one app in the Best of 2018 list by Apple, surpassing classic apps like LINE and Google Maps on the Japanese App Store.
In December 2018, TikTok won the “Best App” award in Indonesia in the Google Play Year-End Awards. Google Play officially cited TikTok for its “rich community interaction and fantastic user-generated content (UGC).”
In January 2019, the national daily Indian Express listed TikTok as one of the favorite apps among Indians for 2018.
In June 2019, TikTok received the Entertainment Excellence Award at the 22nd Japan Media Arts Festival. The Ministry of Culture stated that TikTok’s emergence symbolizes the arrival of an era of social network diversity and has truly created an era where users have choices.
In December 2021, according to data from Cloudflare, a cloud infrastructure company that tracks internet traffic, TikTok was the most visited website on the internet in 2021, surpassing the 2020 leader, Google, owned by Alphabet.
In October 2022, TikTok’s global daily active user count (DAU) surpassed 1 billion.
